Speculation Mounts Over Potential Justin Jefferson Trade to Buffalo Bills

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson is currently not listed for trade, yet recent predictions from CBS Sports may imply otherwise. Jordan Dajani shared several bold offseason predictions recently and highlighted one of them — possibly sending Jefferson to Buffalo Bills — among a host of others.

CBS Sports Proposes a Bold Trade Scenario

The offseason discussions have ignited with a theory that has captured attention. According to the prediction, Buffalo would pursue an aggressive move to acquire Jefferson, reuniting him with Joe Brady, who once coached him during their college years at LSU. Brady, now the head coach of the Bills, would look to bolster his offense by pairing with a familiar and highly talented receiver.

This potential move would mark a significant shift for Buffalo, whose current top wide receiver is Khalil Shakir, a player who typically accumulates around 750 receiving yards per season. The motivation behind the proposed trade is Buffalo’s desire to win immediately and validate the decision to change head coaches following Sean McDermott’s departure.

Jefferson’s Value and Vikings’ Financial Implications

Jefferson’s performance remains outstanding despite a recent dip in stats, marking the lowest in his career for receiving yards and touchdowns in a season. He still ranks among the best in NFL history in terms of receiving yards per game and total receiving yards over five seasons.

Trading Jefferson before June 1st would create a financial challenge for Minnesota due to a $46 million dead cap penalty, essentially meaning the Vikings would pay Jefferson not to play for them. Delaying a trade until after June 1st would reduce this dead cap hit to approximately $14 million, but either scenario presents a significant financial burden.

Buffalo’s Receiving Corps with Jefferson

If acquired, Jefferson would join a wide receiver group including Khalil Shakir, Keon Coleman, Josh Palmer, Curtis Samuel, Tyrell Shavers, Mecole Hardman, and Stephen Gosnell. The addition of Jefferson could reinvigorate the team’s fan base and improve their chances of contending in the AFC, especially following recent playoff disappointments.

Impact on Minnesota’s Offense

On the other side, trading Jefferson would leave the Vikings’ offensive unit significantly weakened. The team would likely promote Jordan Addison as the new No. 1 receiver, potentially re-sign Jalen Nailor, and may seek additional receiving talent through free agency or the draft. However, there appears to be little reason for Minnesota to part ways with their best player, who is still under 27 years old and has not requested a trade.

Most analysts view a Jefferson trade as highly unlikely and propose more practical trade options such as adding Addison who has struggled with consistency and off-field issues.

Salary Cap Considerations

As they prepare for the 2026 offseason, Buffalo faces being approximately $8 million over its salary cap; this adds another layer of complexity into any trade discussions involving high-profile players like Jefferson.
